This simulation is uniquely appropriate for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) initiatives. And it s great fun!
Students will use algebraic thinking, data ysis and the engineering design process to solve problems in real-world settings.
In Building Math for Common Core State Standards: Everest Trek, students overcome the challenges of extreme weather and dangerous trail conditions to conquer the world s tallest mountain.
Students will conduct mathematics investigations including
Locating and representing the range of acceptable values on a graph to meet design criteria
Extrapolating data based on trends.
Producing and yzing graphs that relate two variables
Distinguishing between independent and dependent variables
Producing and yzing graphs that relate two variables
Comparing rates of change (linear versus non linear relationships)
Measuring angles using a protractor
Comparing and discussing appropriate measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode)
Applying the distance-time-speed formula
Science investigations include:
Conducting two controlled experiments.
Collecting experimental data in a table
Using physical and math models
Distinguishing between independent and dependent variables
Building Math was developed through a partnership with the Boston Museum of Science and Tufts University, and successfully piloted in Boston-area schools.
Each book includes a poster illustrating the engineering design process and a DVD with classroom implementation samples.
Addresses Common Core State standards and ITEA standards for technological literacy
