A reprint of an 1845 edition originally published by Greeley & McElrath, New York, collecting the essays of E.P. Hurlbut, a New York City Counselor at Law. The legal arguments discuss the origin of human rights, the function of government, the constitution and its limitations, the elective franchise, rights emanating from the sentiments and affections, the right of women, property, moral relations, and intellectual property. As an historical document, the volume has some interesting views e.g. Hurlbut suggests a species of gender apartheid wherein women can vote, but should elect only female governing bodies. Unfortunately, the pocket size and poor print of this reprint makes reading it a chore for the eyes. Lacks index and bibliography. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
