The military policeman must be one of the least appreciated yet most indispensable military figures in modern history. In the mobile warfare of the 20th century no army could keep its vital supply routes open without the military policeman. This book documents the organisation, uniforms and insignia of the many and varied German military police units of World War II. Their duties included traffic control; maintaining military order and discipline; collection and escorting prisoners of war; prevention of looting; disarming civilians; checking captured enemy soldiers for documents; collection of fallen enemy propaganda leaflets and providing street patrols in occupied areas.

Text-Beilagen. - Englisch. - An unrivalled source of information on the uniforms, insignia and appearance of the world's fighting men of past and present. The Men-at-Arms titles cover subjects as diverse as the Imperial Roman army, the Napoleonic wars and German airborne troops in a popular 48-page format including some 40 photographs and diagrams, and eight full-colour plates. . (Verlagstext) // " . The Polizei combat units became notorious for the savagery with which they put down any partisan activities in their areas. Although officially part of the SS, these troops were not part of the Waffen-SS. These Polizei units were often greatly fragmented, with different battalions of the same regiment being found on different sectors of the front, or even on different fronts. Uniforms and Insignia. Headgear. Several distinct patterns of headgear were worn by the Polizei combat units; the well-known Polizei shako was not one of them, however. The peaked cap or Schirmmütze worn by Schutzpolizei was of similar appearance to that of the Army, but with the capband in brown instead of dark green cloth. Piping was in 'Police green' Waffenfarbe. Insignia comprised a silver metal Polizei-pattern wreathed eagle and swastika on the band, with a national cockade above. An M43 Einheitsfeldmütze similar to the Army's was also worn, sometimes with green piping to the crown. The insignia on this cap was a one-piece machine-woven Polizei eagle and swastika in grey thread on field grey with a national cockade above. A Polizei-pattern sidecap was commonly used by Polizei combat troops. In field grey with green piping, this bore a machine-woven grey silk Polizei-pattern eagle and swastika on black backing. (Officers' caps were piped in silver and had the insignia machine woven in metallic thread.) The steel helmet worn by Polizei troops featured a black escutcheon bearing a silver-grey Polizei eagle and swastika on the right side just below the vent hole. Tunics: The traditional tunic of the Schutzpolizei was in a field grey cloth of a distinctly greener shade than normal. The collar and cuffs were faced with brown cloth, and the cuffs each featured two silvered buttons. Both collar and cuffs were piped in 'Polizei green' Waffenfarbe. Standard Polizei-pattern shoulder straps and collar patches were used. The sleeve eagle on standard Schutzpolizei uniforms bore above its head the title of the town in which the unit was located; the field formations, however, wore the sleeve eagle without such a name.
