Weuner Furbringer (Fips) became one of the most successful U-Boat commanders in WW1 through a blend of skill, daring and, by his own typically modest admission, sheer luck. This vivid memoir, never before published in English, makes compelling reading. This is an inspiring and chivalrous story; it is ironic then that, when finally sunk by the Royal Navy off the East Coast of England, Fips was machine-gunned in the water, contrary to repeated Government denials of such behaviour.

Fips: Legendary U-Boat Commander by Geoffrey Brooks is a biography of Friedrich "Fips" Steinhoff, one of Germany's most respected submarine commanders during World War II. The book traces Steinhoff's naval career from his early service in the Kriegsmarine through his rise as a U-boat commander, highlighting the challenges, dangers, and strategic importance of submarine warfare in the Battle of the Atlantic. Drawing on wartime records, personal accounts, and historical research, Brooks examines Steinhoff's leadership, tactical skill, and reputation among both his crews and fellow officers. The narrative follows his combat patrols, encounters with Allied shipping, and the harsh realities faced by German submariners operating under increasingly difficult wartime conditions. The biography also explores Steinhoff's personal character, relationships with other notable naval figures, and the broader context of Germany's U-boat campaign. Attention is given to the technological, strategic, and human aspects of submarine warfare, providing readers with insight into life aboard a U-boat and the pressures faced by its commanders. More than a military biography, Fips: Legendary U-Boat Commander offers a detailed portrait of an officer whose career reflected both the successes and ultimate decline of Germany's submarine force during World War II. The book appeals to readers interested in naval history, military leadership, and the history of undersea warfare. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-1792978411698
