Professor Banham's witty and perceptive book has the immediacy of direct reportage, for he came to know many of the Masters in their latter years. He writes of the ideas and concepts that made them revolutionary, but above all he writes of the great monuments they have left behind, from Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Glasgow Art School at the beginning of the century, to Mies van der Rohe's National Gallery in Berlin at the end of the Sixties.
