An old man, a professor of medicine, undertakes a long journey by road to the university of Lund where he will receive an honorary degree. In the course of the trip he relives many of the events of his life, visiting his elderly mother and the scenes of his youth. Though many of his recollections are troubled, even bitter, he achieves serenity at the end.
