Buchbeschreibung Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. h/b 511 pages, condition is very good, the DJ has been price clipped. The mild climate and topography of Britain and the high level of demand for milk and meat has made the production of grassland herbage and its conversion into milk, beef and mutton by far the most important feature of British agriculture. This importance is reflected in the great emphasis given in Britain to the scientific study of grasslands and their component grasses and legumes, and has led to the accumulation of a very substantial volume of information, some unpublished, but most of it scattered widely throughout the literature. This book is the collaborative work of leading grassland specialists in Britain under the editorship of Professor C. R.W. Spedding and the late Mr E. C. Diekmahns of the Grassland Research Institute, Hurley. Their aim has been to set down as clearly as possible the main research findings on all the more important herbage grasses and legumes used in British agriculture. The book presents a rounded picture of the biological and agronomic characteristics relevant to their production and utilization, including response to environmental factors, growth habit, yield, response to management, composition and value for animal production. For the most part, the information given is based on work done in Britain, though work done elsewhere is also drawn on where necessary. The book is intended as a record of the present state of knowledge of grasslands and herbage plants in Britain and as a practical reference book for use by extension workers, teachers, students, progressive farmers, scientific workers and all concerned with grassland science and technology.
