Pale blue pictorial card covers, front reproducing Self-portrait as Clown 1911, rear plain blue. Light creasing and bumping to edges and corners. Scuffing concentrated on the rear cover; front cover clean and bright. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Catalogue of the exhibition held in the Sackler Galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, 11 March to 6 June 1993, the London showing of an exhibition conceived and organised by the Musée national d'art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and shown there in 1992 before travelling to the Musée d'art et d'histoire, Fribourg. The period runs from 1903, when Rouault painted his first pictures of prostitutes, to 1920, when he turned to book illustration and the engraved cycles of which the Miserere was the most important, and takes in the clowns, judges, circus performers and Christ subjects that followed his moral crisis of 1902. Whitfield takes her title from Rouault's own account of it: "I started to produce painting of an outrageous lyricism which everyone found most disconcerting." Most of the works catalogued are watercolour, gouache, pastel and ink on paper or card rather than oil, lent by the Pompidou, the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Gallery, the Kunsthaus Zurich and private collections. The Foreword notes that Rouault had been paid insufficient attention in Britain and that the show was a rare chance to see the early work. Hergott, who conceived the exhibition, was then a curator at the Musée national d'art moderne and later directed the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris.
