It is Edwina, aided by Miles Eastin- a young bank staffer with peculiar problems- who first uncovers a trail of crime, leading to The Moneychangers' exciting and suspenseful climax." (illustrator). Book Club Edition. Viewed from outside, First Mercantile American Bank- among America's top twenty- seems a cathedral of respectability, as sound and solid as Fort Knox. It's the kind of bank where the public deposits money confidently, perhaps the kind of bank in which your life savings are now. Yet within FMA are corruption, double dealing, incompetence. Roscoe Heyward, executive vice president-astute and ruthless- is locked in a power struggle with Alex Vandervoort, whose attention to banking is diluted by the tragic insanity of his young wife, Celia, and by his mistress, Margot Bracken, an activist lawyer and controversial public figure. Yet Alex is the bank's conscience, opposing policies which are rooted in greed, imperiling the bank and its trusting depositors. Manipulating FMA's board of directors to his selfish advantage is powerful G.G. (Big George) Quartermain, chairman of Supranational Corporation, an international giant. Big George's fiefdom includes a Caribbean mansion, airborne luxury, and gorgeous women- among them, Avril, a cheerful seducer, in whose person sex and banking meet. At another banking level is Edwina D'Orsey, the wise, sophisticated manager of FMA's "flagship" branch. It is Edwina, aided by Miles Eastin-a young bank staffer with peculiar problems-who first uncovers a trail of crime, leading to The Moneychangers; exciting and suspenseful climax. In between are fascinating glimpses into the world of money.Credit cards-the big-business pressures behind them, and their perils for the unwary; why bank money-traders "wear out" fast; "insider" financial newsletters-how they help the rich get richer; why U.S. currency is the easiest to counterfeit; how interlocking directorships cheat the public; some unpalatable truths about inflation; how prestigious institutions, apparently sound, can crash in ruins, suddenly.and more, much more.
