In a time of conflict, anxiety, war, cruelty and confusion the reader may be surprised that this book is a hymn in praise of love, telling us that all beings love one another... This book . . . does not say that men ought to love, nor does it lament the fact that actually men do not love. It does not tell us in great detail how men should be punished for their failure to love. It simply tells us that all things love one another, and it adds that, as a matter of fact, men do love whether they know it or not. It asserts that men can never cease loving . .. And all that which seems to be distinct from love and which even seems to contradict love, is in reality love. However, in order to see this, one has to love. One has to love wholly, totally, and one has to be willing to accept conflict and contradiction. One has to accept the death of love in order to live the life of love. Once we accept this, we shall see that the conflict disappears and that in reality there is no contradiction, but only love. (from the Preface by Thomas Merton).
