Actual weight of the book is 0.586kg."The Beginning: European Discovery and Early Settlement of the Swan River" is a seminal historical study by R. T. Appleyard and Toby Manford. Published in 1979 by the University of Western Australia Press, the book charts the shift from coastal exploration to the foundation of the Swan River Colony. The early history of the Swan River progressed through three distinct phases: initial European exploration, the diplomatic maneuvering for British annexation, and the harsh realities of early free settlement. Key Historical Details Early Discovery: Dutch explorers, including Willem de Vlaming, explored the area in 1697, and French explorers visited in 1801.Stirling's Expedition: Captain James Stirling explored the Swan River in 1827, producing enthusiastic reports on the region's fertility that persuaded Britain to establish a colony. Establishment: On 2 May 1829, Captain Charles Fremantle raised the British flag, claiming the west coast for Britain, with official settlement following on 18 June 1829. Settlement Growth: Despite early hardships and food shortages, the colony?later named Perth?was established as the capital, with Fremantle as the commercial port. About the Book Authors: Reginald T. Appleyard and Toby Manford. Publisher: University of Western Australia Press (1979/1981).Focus: It analyzes the motivation behind the settlement, including political maneuvers and the challenges faced by the first settlers. The book is recognized as a key text on the early history of Western Australia, sometimes linked to the state's sesquicentenary celebrations. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-1778795820518

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. This book outlines European exploration of the western coast of Australia since the early seventeenth century, especially the area surrounding Swan River and shows how and why its reputation amongst mariners hardly changed. The purpose and circumstances of Stirling's visit in 1827 is analysed in detail, as is the initial criticism of his report by British officials and Stirling's extraordinary conversion of the same officials which led to the government establishing a colony at Swan River. Condition : There is curling to the top edges of the dust jacket. Copyright © University of Western Australia Press. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 457703
