Dust wprs a bit damaged (upper layer has gone on two small spots). Signature and date on free endpaper. Else fine. ?A biographical treatment of Pompey in ten well-ordered chapters is followed in Appendix A by a useful short account of the sources and in Appendix B by a selection of sources in translation. (?) The book does not pretend to be one of fundamental reinterpretation or of profound reflection. (?) Overall the book is written with commendable clarity, is informed by much common sense, and contains many shrewd, pertinent, and often stimulating comments. The accounts of military activity, which necessarily figure substantially but are not allowed to dominate unduly, are well handled and easy to follow; and great skill is displayed in the arrangement and presentation of the complex and confused material of the 50s. The lucid and comprehensible treatment of those years which results in an especially welcome feature of a generally helpful and useful book.? (ALAN E.
