His portrayal of the mind and passion of King Herod, a ruler traditionally vilified in Catholic Spain during Calderon's age, reveals a compassionate understanding and lack of prejudice. Through the madness of possessive love and jealousy, Herod first destroys his wife's love and trust, and then her life.

Jose Maria Ruano de la Haza is Academico Correspondiente de la Real Academia Espanola and Professor Emeritus, University of Ottawa. Ann L. Mackenzie is Ivy McClelland Research Professor of Spanish at the University of Glasgow. Kenneth Arthur Muir was a literary scholar and author, prominent in the fields of Shakespeare studies and English Renaissance theatre. He served as King Alfred Professor of English Literature at Liverpool University from 1951 to 1974.
