Rational persuasion and appeal to an audience's emotions are elements of most literature, but they are found in their purest form in oratory. The speeches written by the Greek Orators for delivery in law-courts, deliberative councils and assemblies enjoyed an honoured literary status, and rightly so, for the best of them have great vitality. There is no crude, primitive stage of development: the earliest speeches are perfect in form and highly sophisticated in technique. They inform the reader about aspects of Greek society and about their moral values, in a direct and illuminating way not paralleled in other literature.

Softcover. Zustand: Gut. IX, 164 pp. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Cover slightly rubbed, otherwise a very good and clean copy. - The defendant in this case, Neaira, is a former slave prostitute charged with living in marriage illegally with an Athenian citizen. The prosecutor, Apollodoros (himself the son of a freed slave, the banker Pasion who achieved phenomenal wealth and Athenian citizenship) is an Athenian politician. The speech is a remarkable document for the insight it gives into Athenian social life (especially the life of women, from slave prostitutes through expensive courtesans to the wives and daughters of citizens) and values, religion, history and politics; for lurking behind the pursuit of Neaira is the internal political struggle in Athens in the shadow of the rising power of Macedon. The speech is also interesting as an example of the work of a minor Attic orator, Apollodoros, whose distinctive speeches have survived under the name of Demosthenes, to whom they were falsely ascribed in antiquity. Despite its intrinsic appeal and wide popularity, there is no commentary widely available. This volume fills a sorely felt gap. - From the Introduction: Apollodoros is well known to us from a number of speeches preserved in the Demosthenic corpus. He was bom in 394. His father Pasion was originally a slave in a bank. He was freed and became a banker himself. He was subsequently granted Athenian citizenship. When he died in 370 Pasion left a vast fortune. About Apollodoros' personal life we know only the sort of scandalous and unreliable detail which was standard ammunition in Greek litigation. We are better informed about his public activities. Partly no doubt out of genuine gratitude to Athens for the gift of citizenship, partly because he wished to ingratiate himself with the people as a foundation for a political career, Apollodoros was especially diligent in performing leitourgiai. In 368 he served as trierarch of a ship in Peloponnesian waters. In 366/5 he was joint trierarch on two ships in succession. He was joint trierarch of a ship in the north Aegaean from autumn 362 to February 360. In 362 he was also one of the rich men charged with making advance payment of the war levy; such men would pay the tax in advance and recoup the appropriate amount from others liable to the tax. He served as joint trierarch of the ship Phosphoros in 356. He was chorus producer (choregos) for his tribe in the boys' dithyramb at the Dionysia in 352/1. The only office he is known to have held is that of member of the Council of Five Hundred in 349-8. ISBN 0856685267 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 250. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 1253467
