"The overseas empire which Rome acquired from the third century BC onwards was perhaps the single most important issue in Roman history thereafter, as the Roman city-state became ever more like a world-state. The empire had to be administered. This volume shows how, to a large extent, it came to run itself. In his introduction, David Braund examines the essential framework of the empire as it developed throughout the period. He draws attention to the impact of empire upon Rome itself - an impact that was not only social and economic but also political and ideological. Joyce Reynolds utilises neglected sources - particularly inscriptions - to present an account of the role of cities in the life of the empire. W.S. Hanson formulates recent advances in archaeology in his discussion of Roman involvement in the creation of towns in non-urban areas of the western empire, most notably Britain. In the final chapter, David Braund presents the results of the latest research on the client kings and queens who bore much of the brunt of empire and who became, from Augustus onwards, ever more a part of the empire, obtaining citizenship and even seats in the Roman Senate by the beginning of the second century AD.
