This annual report looks at freedom of the press throughout the world. In 1992 at least 61 journalists in 21 countries died because they came too close to the truth. From the former Yugoslavia to Azerbaijan to Venezuela, wars and coups d'etats have brought their share of victims, the embarrassing witnesses of atrocities they should never have seen, of facts they will never now report. Others, in Egypt, Chad and the Philippines, died because of what they had written, for one sentence too many about exactions by the authorities, an intolerant group of fundamentalists or a government. Another 123 were still in prison on 1st January 1993 - a quarter of them in China.
