During the glacial periods of the Pleistocene era 600,000 years ago, much of the world's mighty oceans froze at the north and south poles, causing a fall in water level elsewhere. This meant that there were land bridges between Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania. However, Australia has remained separate from the Indonesian Archipelago throughout Cenozoic time: 50,000,000 years! The continent's present fauna includes: 108 species of placental mammals; 125 marsupials, 950 birds; 2 monotremes; 380 reptiles; 122 frogs; 180 freshwater fish; 730 molluscs and 54,000 species of insects! The marsupials are considered typically Australian; because it is only here that they have proliferated without the placental predators or competitors. There are few left in the American continent and none in Europe. Fossils of marsupials dating back 25,000,000 years have been found in Australia; there are remains of a sabre-toothed animal called "Thylacosmilus"; a lion-like creature; "Thylacoleo"; and when the Ice Age held sway over Europe an animal the size of a Black Bear, the Giant Wombat "Phascolonus", roamed Australia. Today, however, everyone can enjoy the wonders of Australia's animal life, in all its unique diversity. This continent offers a richness of fauna that is an asset, not just for the country as a whole, but for the entire world, and is a colorful delight for the visitor and naturalist alike.
