The impression emerging from the modern of Donne's (1572-1631) sermons is of a preacher who delicately balanced personal conscience regarding his spiritual duty with the external demands of political authority. Though recognizing these cultural conditions, Nelson treats them not as limitations on his freedom as a preacher, but as part of the rhetorical resources that he found available to him in early 17th-century England. Donne was always aware of his public function as Dean of St. Paul's in London, he argues, but was also alert to his duty as a shepherd of individual souls. Zustand: as new. Tempe, Ariz. : Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, 2005. 306 pp. Hardcover. - This study examines the rich resource for rhetorical invention that Donne found in contemporary culture of courtship. The first half of the book employs the theories of Kenneth Burke in tandem with ancient and Early-Modern rhetorical theory to examine Elizabethan and Jacobean expressions of social desire (sexual, political, economic, etc.). It demonstrates how Donne employed these modes of courtship to stimulate and direct his audience's thought and desire with respect to matters of religious devotion. The second half of the book applies this socio-rhetorical paradigm of courtship in close-readings of three Donne sermons. This study will be of interest to scholars and students of Early-Modern literature and rhetoric and to those interested in homiletics and devotional literature. Condition : as new copy.
