N. J. Loftis was born in Chicago in 1943. He has an undergraduate degree from Fisk University and graduate degrees from Columbia University. He is now teaching at Hunter College, the City University of New York. Mr. Loftis' previous book is Exiles and Voyages (Black Market Press).
