Researchers working in political science, public policy, and governmental studies in the US conducted a survey between 2018 and 2019 of registered lobbyists and public agency legislative liaison officers in all 50 states, to understand lobbyists' views on civil discourse in US state legislatures, particularly whether the crisis in civil discourse and political civility in the national population and US Congress is also occurring in state legislatures and the factors associated with positive and negative civil discourse. They discuss the impact of political culture heritage on perceptions of civil discourse; the impact of legislative professionalization, political culture, professionalism, term limits, and other factors across states; comparison of lobbyists with and without prior service as legislators or legislative staff; the effects of the rural/urban divide; the effects of inequality; the impact of public interest lobbying; and encouraging civility. Über die Autorinnen und Autoren

Nicholas P. Lovrich is Regents Professor Emeritus at Washington State University. He served as the director of the Division of Governmental Studies and Services for more than three decades.

Francis Benjamin is the Information Systems Coordinator and Psychology Shop Supervisor for the Washington State University Department of Psychology. He holds an M.A. in Political Science from Washington State University.

John Pierce is a faculty member at the University of Kansas School of Public Affairs and Administration as well as the School of Public Policy at Oregon State University. He has co-authored or co-edited approximately 20 books, essay collections, and research monographs, including Public Knowledge and Environmental Politics in Japan and the United States, and more than 150 scholarly articles, essays, and other materials.

William Schreckhise is an associate professor and the chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Arkansas. He received his Ph.D. from Washington State University and is the author of Evaluating American Democracy and Public Policymaking.
