Grade 6-9 In a clear and straightforward fashion, Smith presents a guide to weight training for beginners. Tests for measuring strength are followed by descriptions of the general principles of weight training, the training routine and exercises for flexibility and strength. Also included are sections on competitive weightlifting, tips on nutrition, routines to be used in training for specific sports and sample charts needed to keep track of progress. Safety precautions abound (e.g., warnings against steroids; insistence on the need for spotters for some routines). Intended for use by young women as well as by young men, the text is written in a style that will offend neither sex. Although the strength measurement tests suggest easier exercises for females, the weight-training routines themselves make no differentiation between the sexes. The black-and-white photos, while small, clearly and effectively illustrate the positions described in the text and feature both male and female weightlifters. More complete and with broader appeal then George Sullivan's Better Weight Training for Boys (Dodd, 1983), Junior Weight Training is a good addition to an under-represented subject area. Jeffrey A.
