The power struggle inspired popular accounts of the Kremlin's labyrinthine succession process, with Dusko Doder's Shadows and Whispers ( LJ 1/87) among the best of those focusing on the Brezhnev-Gorbachev period. Owen offers an exceptionally well written survey of Soviet succession which differs from Doder's in covering the entire history of Soviet leadership change from the death of Lenin and by giving greater emphasis to the political milieu and myriad other factors.
