Rezensionen

The great migration of Russian Jews to America was exemplified by the life and work of Yiddish poet and short story writer Morris Rosenfeld (1862-1923), who here receives a short biography and passionate appraisal from his grandson. Goldenthal's cultural critique and view of Jewish life in present-day America are reworkings in a different key of the struggles and ideas that shaped Rosenfeld's generation. Many of Rosenfeld's poems are included (in Yiddish, transliterated, and translated), and a generous selection of stories also appears. A personal, nonscholarly view of the writer and of Yiddish language and literature, this is recommended especially for Jewish studies collections.?Gene Shaw, NYPL
