Lost Paradise The Exploration of the Pacific
Die Inhaltsangabe kann sich auf eine andere Ausgabe dieses Titels beziehen.
A comprehensive popular history of Pacific exploration by the author of Magellan . Cameron's narrative is readable and accurate, but its division into national histories (Spanish, British, etc.) rather than a straight chronological account, its failure to provide adequate historical context, and its concentration on a few major explorers, reduce its value for the general reader. The title indicates the author's strongly held view that Europeans destroyed a near-idyllic civilization. A profusely illustrated work in an area inadequately covered by good general popular histories. J.F. Husband, Framingham State Coll. Lib., Mass.

A NEAR FINE, bright, clean, tight, scholar/collector-worthy copy sans rips/tears, stains, or discoloration. PROLIFICALLY ILLUSTRATED in black-and-white and full-color photography with accompanying descriptive captions. "Ian Cameron's book describes the physical creation of the Pacific, and suggests how the ocean's multitude of islands may have been first populated by those true discoverers of the ocean, the Polynesians. it brings vividly to life the epic voyages of the Spanish, Dutch, British, French, Russian and American explorers as they battled against the vast distances of the Pacific and the appalling weather conditions of the ocean's polar approaches. It recounts the excesses of the exploiters-the freebooters, sealers, whalers, missionaries and traders-who followed in the explorers' wake. Making extensive use of contemporary diaries and of material and illustrations from the archives of the Royal Geographical Society, Ian Cameron chronicles, in a narrative of extreme readability, both the triumph of the Pacific voyages and the tragedy of their aftermath." 248 pages. *NOTE: Due to size/weight of the book additional shipping cost will be required for out-of-U.S shipment.
