Slochower begins her study by questioning the therapeutic limitations of an interactive style. There are times, she proposes, when certain patients simply cannot tolerate evidence of the analyst's separate subjective presence and instead need a holding experience. Joyce Anne Slochower, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology at Hunter College and The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, and Clinical Professor, Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, New York University. She is a faculty member of the Object Relations Institute and supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies.
