He was a son of General Baron Peter N. Wrangel, the last Commander in Chief of the White Russian Army during the Russian Civil War. The Wrangel family was of the local Baltic German nobility, and Pyotr Nikolayevich was distantly related to the famed Arctic explorer Ferdinand von Wrangel.
