Michael Ondaatje's poems have been celebrated by readers and writers alike for containing some of the most memorable and moving verse written in the past half-century. The Story combines Ondaatje's sensual writing with watercolor illustrations by celebrated painter David Bolduc, making a unique item. Left-hand pages contain Bolduc's art while right-hand pages contain Ondaatje's poem — both typeset and in the author's own handwriting. This elegant housing is a fitting accompaniment to Ondaatje's elegaic poem, which follows his larger themes — love, memory, family, exile — even as it unfolds into "our dismantled childhoods," and offers readers the opportunity to extend its narrative into their own lives.

The Story

Verkäuferbewertung 5 von 5 Sternen
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. House of Anansi Press, Published 2005. Hardcover, 48 pp. (unpaginated); 24 cm; First Edition (with full number line); illustrated with color drawings by David Bolduc. In Very Good condition, no dust jacket as issued. Black cloth boards with small color illustration pasted to front board within a blind-stamped frame, silver lettering on front board and spine. Mild shelf and edge wear. Binding tight. Publisher's printed paper band around rear board with some bumping and creasing, a few nicks along the edge, and an Amazon inventory sticker at lower edge. Scuffed patch on the half-title page and its facing page where a thin layer of paper has pulled away, apparently from removed tape or glue. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked.[From rear band] For his first forty days a child is given dreams of previous lives. And so the story begins. Like a miniature of Michael Ondaatje's larger themes (love, memory, family, exile) "The Story" unfolds into "our dismantled childhoods," and offers us the freedom to extend its narrative into our own lives. This beautiful edition of Michael Ondaatje's poem was conceived by Ondaatje and artist David Bolduc as a fundraising project for World Literacy of Canada. Bolduc's haunting illustrations complement two renderings of the words, once in print and again in Ondaatje's own distinctive handwriting. All royalties from the sale of this book will go directly to WLC to help it continue its literacy work with women and children in India. The poem first appeared in Handwriting (McClelland and Stewart, 1998). Each opening prints the lines in type with a facsimile of Ondaatje's handwriting printed in red beneath. Text designed by Stan Bevington and set at Coach House Press in Cartier Book. This is the trade edition; the book was first printed by Coach House in a limited edition of 125 numbered copies. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 20260831007
