Spanish documents reveal that Pueblo fabrics were highly valued and traded extensively over great distances from California to the Mississippi River Valley until European introduced wool became readily available. Weaving went into a decline and most production was used for dances or ceremonies. This catalog provides a glimpse of some fine examples of the textile arts as they were practiced prior to WWII. A clean pristine book. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 007338

Buchbeschreibung Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. 'Timeless Textiles' follows the Pueblo weaving tradition through a tumultuous century during which many changes took place in Pueblo life and after which weaving fell into sharp decline. The 100 years between 1840 and 1940 represents a classic period in Pueblo textile production, yet the magnificent textiles produced during this time are little known outside of the Pueblo world. This catalogue accompanies an exhibit at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe running from 17 May 2003 to 15 February 2004. The Ancestral Pueblo people of the Southwest were excellent weavers; plain cotton cloth appeared in the archaeological record by the first century AD. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of pueblo weaving at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, "Timeless Textiles presents a survey of textiles from 1840 to 1940 that have been overshadowed by the more glamorous Navajo blanket and rug traditions.
