Nineteen papers comprise the contributions to the October 1998 symposium, while seven papers from the concurrent symposium entitled "Food Security and Sustainable Agricultural Development for the 21st Century in India" are also included. In the view of the editors, sustainable agriculture must be characterized by favorable economics, conservation of resources, preservation of ecology, and promotion of social justice. All of these issues are touched upon in looking at such topics as the roles of policy, market, agribusiness, NGOs, and indigenous knowledge in the development of sustainable production systems. Specific subjects examined include watershed management; technology modification, transfer, and testing; farmer-scientist collaboration in research and agricultural development; and soil management.
