Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
„Schöpferische Kraft lässt sich nicht anerziehen, aber die Bereitschaft zum Empfang der göttlichen Gabe in Gestalt eines stets willigen und zu höchsten Leistungen fähigen Handwerks lässt sich erwerben.“ 1921 gehörte er zu den Mitbegründern der Donaueschinger Musiktage, 1927 war er bereits Professor für Komposition an der Berliner Hochschule für Musik: Paul Hindemith (1895–1963). Der einst als Bürgerschreck Verschriene fand in den 20er Jahren zur Neuen Sachlichkeit und gelangte schließlich zur Skepsis gegenüber einem als hemmungslos empfundenen Fortschrittsdenken der jungen Komponistengeneration. Sein spätes Ideal eines vorwiegend tonal gebundenen Satzes stieß seinerseits auf Ablehnung der musikalischen Avantgardebewegung. Ihr Theoretiker Theodor W. Adorno brandmarkte diese Entwicklung als „fatale Wendung zum Offiziellen“ und gab damit das Signal zu einer Jahrzehnte dauernden Isolation Hindemiths und seiner Musik. Ein veränderter Blick auf die Musikgeschichte lässt Hindemith heute den Rang eines führenden Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts, eines herausragenden Dirigenten, Pädagogen und Musikphilosophen einnehmen und eines der meistgespielten Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Its content has been set forth and explained countless times before, and there are some excellent books on the subject in various languages. But in order to understand the best works in this field and to make the proper use of them, one must already be a fairly advanced musician. Such a musician will find in them a remarkably good survey of the basic material, but a beginner will hardly be in a position to digest the overwhelming mass and variety of facts and procedures, or to select what is useful for him. Moreover, the exercises given in such books (when any are given) are insufficient. There is, on the other hand, no lack of less comprehensive, more specialized works, full of exercises for the beginner. But here the difficulty is that those books that try to give general theoretical instruction are either antiquated, in opinion and approach, or insufficient for a professional's education; and in most cases their exercises seem to be made for the author's satisfaction and self-assertion rather than for the student's profit, or they are so dry that even the most docile user cannot see their relationship to living music. The book grew out of the demands of my classes in theory, and was written for the benefit of my students.
