Soboul's own celebrated work on the Parisian sansculottes uniquely qualifies him to explore the popular depths of the Revolution, and the dialectic of masses, cadres and leaders which finally determined the course and fate of the Republic.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Albert Soboul was born into a peasant family in the Cévennes in 1914. A pupil of Georges Lefebvre, whom he acknowledges as his outstanding teacher, he gained his doctorate with his monumental study of the Parisian sansculottes. In 1967 he became Professor of the History of the French Revolution at the Sorbonne. He is now also President of the Société des Etudes robespierristes, and General Secretary of the Annale historique de la Révolution Française.
