This book, republished after twenty yeatrs, may be seen as an extended refutation of Wilde's remark. English faces may not always be beautiful or harmonious, but many are at least memorable. This emerges clearly from the survey written by David Piper who considers the face of each period in turn, as depicted in the works of its portrait-painters, miniaturists, sculptors, caricaturists, and photographers, and shows that every agehad its own ideal standard of beauty. 145 black & white reproductions of 'faces' through the years, with accompanying text.
