Buchbeschreibung Paperback. Zustand: Good. 119 pages. rear cover rippedOpium & Gold is the story of the Chinese goldminers in New Zealand. Almost a forgotten segment of our past, it tells the story of racism and repression which is hi ghly relevant to contemporary New Zealand. Peter Butler writes of how the 'almond-eyed ones from The Flowery Land' arrived in New Zealand in search of gold, and of the violence they confronted. S ome achieved their goal of gold aplenty and returned to their hom eland, while others found the going tough and just managed to eke a living, turning to other pursuits like pakapoo, opium and chur ch. Opium & Gold is the story of their life in New Zealand, of th e influx of the 'yellow horde', of the crisis their arrival creat ed in Parliament and in the outback towns near the golddiggings. In a racy narrative filled with fact, Peter Butler has managed to blend social history, contemporary accounts and photographs in a n absorbing book; it is a real and important contribution to the understanding of New Zealand's interesting past.--Back cover. Buchbeschreibung Soft Covers. Zustand: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Drawing, Document (illustrator). 1st. In the 1860s the gold rushes of NZ's South Island attracted a small number of Chinese from the Australian diggings and in this fine account of the reception they, and those who followed, received in what was a raciest era is recorded,as are subsequent events. Some did strike it rich and returned to China, however, most experienced hard times, with little reward for their labour and the hostility they encountered,.Those who stayed on in NZ eventually created what became the Chinese community, which prospered to contribute to many fields of enterprise and endeavour although, following the Rush period, many turned. with success, to trading, market gardening and fruit and vegetable shop ownership. Peter Butler's "Opium and Gold" examines all aspects of the establishment of the Chinese community in NZ, providing a detailed record of this area of NZ's previously little explored social history. This well produced, card cover, first edition of 1977 has 14 chapters and a bibliography.
