Aus der Sammlung von 84.000 Objekten des RISD Museum of Art haben die Kuratoren 375 Kunstwerke für diesen Band ausgewählt. Geografisch in ungefährer chronologischer Reihenfolge angeordnet, stellen sie die Höhepunkte der Sammlung dar. Obwohl viele hier abgebildete Objekte dauerhaft sichtbar bleiben, wird nicht jedes Kunstwerk jederzeit in den Galerien sein. Dieser beeindruckende Band enthält mehrere hundert Farb- und Schwarz-Weiß-Bilder sowie neue wissenschaftliche Einträge mehrerer beitragender Autoren. Dieses Projekt wurde teilweise durch eine großzügige Auszeichnung der National Endowment for the Arts unterstützt. Erhebliche Finanzierung wurde von den RISD Museum Associates bereitgestellt.
