Hard Back. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Printing Stated. 109 Pages. A Sequence of French Poems by Rainer Maria Rilke This volume presents for the first time in English translation a fifty-nine poem sequence that Rilke wrote originally in French. A. Poulin, Jr.'s sensitive translations are accompanied by the French originals, printed on facing pages. Rilke's work in German-notably The Duino Elegies, The Sonnets to Orpheus and Letters to a Young Poet - ranks him among the very greatest and most popular poets and writers of the twentieth century. Not as well known is that fact that towards the end of his life Rilke wrote nearly 400 poems in French. As the translator has noted elsewhere, in only four years Rilke wrote more poems in a language foreign to him than most poets write in their native tongue in an entire lifetime. Orchards is the third off our books that will bring most of the French poems into English translation. Among the responses to the earlier volumes in the series: W. D. Snodgrass wrote that the French poems offer us all of Rilke's accustomed elegance of attitude, his grace of diction, above all his wealth and generosity of creation, that effortless heaping of image upon image, invention upon invention, loveliness upon loveliness. A new and unsuspected wealth of joyous inventions. Robert Phillips, in Commonweal, noted Rilke's inventive and powerful poems and the poems of The Roses & The Windows as celebrations and affirmations of human life. Choice called Poulin's translation very fine and named The Roses & The Windows an Outstanding Academic Book 1980-81. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 22949
