The 5 volume Learn-To-Read Series contains 4 readers in each volume: Volume II —Ann, book 5, introduces the digraph “an.” Many new words can be made from “an” by placing a consonant in front of it. The reader becomes aware of the difference between a name and the diagraph “an.” This is the beginning of grammar training: a capital letter is used for names and to begin a sentence. Ann’s Pans & Cans, book 6, creates new words from the digraph “an.” The sentences are kept simple allowing the reader to feel successful. In Jay’s Fat Cat, book 7, the child is now reading sentences with two to four lines on a page. Feel the force in “Go cat!” “See Fat Cat go!” Action verbs delight a child and keep him focused on the action. The child is now reading for meaning.
