The work of Irene Brady, a long-time naturalist, author and illustrator, has appeared in Audubon, RV Journal, Ranger Rick Nature Magazine, Cricket, Your Big Backyard, and other natural history magazines — as well as numerous books by herself and others.
She made long sojourns into the redrock back country of Utah, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado while researching this book. Her experiences, on-site sketches and field notes (plus years of additional research), formed the basis for this fascinating and informative exploration of life in a redrock canyon.

(The first two chapters introduce the geology and ecology of the redrock canyon country. The actual story begins with Chapter 3, which follows.) Chapter 3. The Coyote
From a point of red sandstone on the canyon lip, the coyote looked down into the canyon with sharp eyes. Blue shadows were creeping up the sandstone arch in the orange canyon wall as the sun sank behind him. A cool breeze ruffled the long hairs on his belly and the fur of the cottontail rabbit he had just caught for his family's dinner. To the east, a full silver moon floated up over the rimrock. A tall sandstone monument, carved by wind and rain for a million years, pointed at the sky like a finger.
The coyote shivered in the cool air and his nose went up as his wild cry filled the canyon air.
"Wup-wup-wah-eeeeeeeer. Wup-wup-wah-eeeeeeeeer." As his song floated off down the canyon he cocked his head and listened closely. There! From far down the canyon he heard his mate's answering howl "Wup-wup-wah-eeer," she sang. Then several squeaky notes joined in, "weeeoooooeeeoooeeeee, weeeeep-weeeeooooeeee!" as their young pups joined the concert.
The male coyote wagged his tail in delight, then snatched up the cottontail, trotted to the edge of the slick-rock sandstone and disappeared down the narrow trail into the canyon.
On the ledge at the mouth of the den, the mother coyote watched over her family. The three pups were wildly excited -- this had been their first concert. The biggest pup leaped on the littlest pup, knocking it over in a tangle of flying fur. The third pup snapped with sharp white teeth at passing ears and tails.
Suddenly the male coyote was standing over them with the rabbit in his mouth. The puppies' play-growls turned into wild yips of excitement and muffled sneezing as they leaped onto the bundle of tickley fur. Soon their small bellies were round and full, and they sprawled contentedly on the dusty den floor. The female ate what was left of the cottontail, then she stepped over the pups to lie beside her mate on the ledge. And as the moonlight poured over the little family, they gently licked each other's faces.
