Allen E. Ivey is Distinguished University Professor (Emeritus), University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is President of Microtraining Associates. He received his A.B. degree, Phi Beta Kappa, in psychology from Stanford University in 1955. After a year as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Copenhagen, he completed his Ed.D. (1959) at Harvard University.
Ivey, a diplomate in counseling psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology, is past president and Fellow of the Division of Counseling Psychology (17) of the American Psychological Association (APA). He is also a Fellow of the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues of APA and a life member of the American Counseling Association. He has served as Fulbright Senior Lecturer and twice as Norman Munn Distinguished Visitor in Psychology at Flinders University, South Australia (1982,1999); and he has lectured widely through Europe, the Pacific, and Japan.
Ivey's clinical experience includes the founding of counseling centers at Bucknell University (1959) and Colorado State University (1963) and counseling appointments at the Veteran's Administration where he worked closely with returning Vietnam veterans, He has authored or coauthored twenty-five books (translated into over 16 languages) and more than 200 articles and chapters.
