Jean Sangwine was a music teacher, CBC radio commentator, and high school English teacher befor she discovered the profession she found most rewarding of all: Teacher of English as a Second Language for New Canadians.

Experience in this field soon convinced her that students aquired English more readily and less painfully when they were engrossed in subjects that touched their hearts.

In no case was this truth more evident than that of a lonely student fron China who developed an affection for a snapping turtle. As he observed and talked about the turtle, then read abou the subject and even wrote letters to Toronto's Metropolitain Zoo, the young lad extended his control of a strange new language.

He also inspired Ms. Sangwine's story- part fact, part fiction- titled A Turtle Called Friendly.

Bernadette Lau was born in Hong Kong. As a teenager, she migrated with her family from Hong Kong to Thunder Bay in Northern Ontario, where she completed the last two yeears of high school. Her own experience as a young immigrant helped her to understand Ming, the character in the book, and to capture so vividly his feelings of isolation in her illustrations.

After graduating from high school, Ms Lau moved to Toronto where she attended the Ontario College of Art and graduated with a Diploma in Communications and Design.

Ms. Lau's illustrations have been published in many children's books, textbooks, and magazines. She has also worked extensively in commercial art, producing brochures, posters, and flyers for major corporations.
