Most independent filmmakers have a limited knowledge of the law and, thus, are at a disadvantage when it comes to negotiating the financing and distribution of a film. The purpose of this book is to help them "level the playing field," according to film and entertainment attorney John W. Cones, author of the 526-page book that defines more than 4,000 terms associated with film finance and distribution. "The large film studios and theater chains employ attorneys and others who are experts in negotiating film contracts," adds Cones, who has been called the nation’s foremost legal advocate for independent filmmakers.
