From Introduction: Health assessment can be broadly defined as any method that accesses and analyzes data about a person's or a population's health. It can cover everything from questionnaires to clinical/laboratory testing, to medical records review, to cost and utilization data reviews. This Handbook provides information on many different types of health assessment instruments and on some of the theoretical positions that underlie them. It cannot cover all instruments or all available theories; however, it is a significant expansion beyond health risk appraisal, and points toward continued broadening of scope in future editions. This edition focuses largely, but not exclusively, on instruments which collect individual data, but which are capable of summarization to produce population level views.
