Softbound. Glossy card. Zustand: Very Good. William Wegman (illustrator). First Edition. Not only signed in ink by Wegman but a full page ink drawing on the half-title page and a small dog head drawing mounted onto the inside front cover. The illustration on the half-title is a line drawing with a bit of whimsy, open to many a narrative possibility but silly and fun, if not great art. An apple suspended from a tree by spring is dangling out of reach of a dog head, presumably a Weimaraner, whose body appears to be an enormous pear-shaped object. Looking on, leaning against the tree trunk, is a ghost, probably amused by the situation. This in a book about Wegman as an artist that was issued with an exhibition mounted by the Walker Art Center that traveled to a half-dozen other museums afterward, including the Corcoran. The book, which is more than a mere catalogue, was published the year that Wegman's first Weimaraner with whom he rode to fame beyond art circles, passed away, and a few years before he got her very worth successor. So we would say that while Wegman was already known for his dog portraiture, he had yet to become a brand. Square 4to. 24 by 24 cm. 79, [1] pp. The copy has an impressed ownership stamp on the half title page of illustrator and Parsons Professor Steven Guarnaccia. Two leaves near near the center are chipped. One is a small corner chip, the other, somewhat larger, a little up from the lower corner, and the chip continues as a surface abrasion for a short span. A nearly invisible dampstain, narrow and along the edge of a few leaves, and occasional other trivial marks of soiling or use. Generally, the glossy leaves are clean.
