Softcover. Zustand: Fine. Generally fine, with a hint of wear at one tip. Uncommon. Perfect bound in illustrated stiff wrappers. 384 pp. with index. Illustrated with photos. A full facsimile reissue of the rare original 1930 publication. Autobiographical account of Ralph Middleton Munroe (1851-1933) a noted American yacht designer and an early inhabitant of Coconut Grove on Biscayne Bay in South Florida. A native of Staten Island, New York, he attended Columbia University and as a young man he bought his first boat, the "Hornet", for $2.00 in 1874. He met William Brickell, the businessman who founded Miami, Florida, while sailing of the Staten Island coast. Munroe learned of Biscayne Bay from Brickell and first visited there in 1877. When his wife, Eva, contracted tuberculosis, he moved her and the children to Biscayne Bay but Eva dies in 1882 (her's is the oldest marked grave in Miami). By 1886, Munroe decided to make Coconut Grove his permanent home, acquired land and in1891 built Barnacle House (which still stands in original condition in Barnacle Historic State Park). He continued to build yachts (a total of 56 in his lifetime) at the boathouse he constructed on the bay. Munroe's autobiography is one of the few works to describe in detail early life at Coconut Grove and Biscayne Bay. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers E34780
