Jule Charney was a leader in the fields of meteorology and oceanography whose scientific contributions led to the creation of new areas of research such as assimilation of satellite data, tropical dynamics, and geostrophic turbulence. This collection of 50 of Charney's papers, written between 1947 and 1981, includes reminiscences by his doctoral students. Papers reflect the evolution of research in areas including the physical basis of numerical prediction of large-scale motions in the atmosphere, nonlinear theory of a wind-driven homogenous layer near the equator, and the predictability of monsoons. Shukla, a student of Charney's, teaches earth science and global change in the School of Computational Sciences at George Mason University. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
