After studying at the Moscow Gymnasium he graduated from the St. Petersburg Law School and entered the Ministry of Finance. He was sent to Berlin to study the German banking system, but in 1904 he volunteered for the Russo~Japanese war where he was decorated with the St. George Cross for bravery. In 1914 he worked for the Red Cross and managed the family estate of Sably in the Crimea. After the overthrow of the tsarist regime he was elected to the Cadet Party in the Crimea and edited the newspaper «the Voice of Taurid ». His family also owned the famous estate Kamenka in the Ukraine which Pushkin wrote about and where Tchalkovsky, whose sister had married a Davydoff, was a frequent guest. When the bolsheviks came into power he emigrated to Paris where he edited the Russian newspaper «Vosrojdenie» and was active in artistic and literary circles, ably seconded by his talented wife Olga Yakovlevna. After the Second World War he moved to New York where he continued his literary activities, wrote for Russian newspapers, and spoke on the «Voice of America».
