Brings together thirteen poets honoring the rich heritage of the anthracite coal region of Northeastern Pennsylvania. All have lived in the area for significant periods. They explore both obliquely and directly the book's central metaphor of mining. They touch on: the texture of family life and ethnic heritage, the confluence of cultures the daily brutality and danger of mining, as well as its scars on the environment and on souls. But there is also humor and lyricism, along with the regional myths that protect the dignity of marginalized lives. Religion is a pervasive theme in these pages reflecting the region. Glimpses of the area are as clear and glittery as shining pieces of coal. These poems reflect the strength of the human spirit in difficult but sometimes beautiful and consoling circumstances.
