Workers in the field of Russian and Soviet studies have long seen the need for a book on the Soviet Union written by experts but addressed to the general reader. This book aims to fill that need. Twenty-five experts in their respective branches of the field have contributed chapters on major aspects of Soviet life combining fact and interpretation in ways designed to attract both students and the wider lay public. This is a book for anyone wanting to understand the Soviet Union today. Perhaps I should stress what the book is not. It is not a textbook - not in the comprehensive and mainly factual sense of the term. It is more personal than that - more interpretive, more varied in approach, concerned less with "covering" the subject than with responding to the questions most commonly asked of experts. Nor is this book a scholarly monograph, written by specialists for other specialists. The notes appended to the chapters are there only to identify the source of a particular fact or quotation, to indicate where dedicated investigators might look further in the matter at hand, or to provide a little supplementary information. Most readers, therefore, will quickly pass over the notes. Although the chapters were written by different authors and can be read as self-contained essays, they are arranged in chronological and then thematic order, and so are perhaps better read in succession, as presented. A selection of both textbooks and more specialized works in the field of Soviet studies will be found at the book's end. These "Further Reading Suggestions," carefully prepared with the advice of the authors, are meant to assist students and others determined to know more. We hope that this may be everybody. Understanding the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the biggest country in the world and one of its two most powerful, is no easy task. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 084835
