In 1963, Don Eulert with Jim Bull founded and edited American Haiku, the first journal in English devoted to Zen poems of Japanese tradition. These editions, which led to flourishing haiku societies and publications of haiku in English and many languages, have become collector's items, along with Eulert's study of Emerson and the Way of Zen and his poetry in Haiku and Senryu (1973).

Senior Fulbright Fellow and recipient of a National Endowment of Humanities grant, Eulert has published eight books of poetry, ranging from the mythology of Buffalo Bill to translations of Modern Romanian poetry. He has promulgated Zen and haiku in teaching at Columbia University, at Reed College, at the C.G. Jung Institut - Zurich. And particularly at the California School of Professional Psychology (San Diego), as Professor of Cultural Psychology for over 20 years, he has given thousands of graduate psychotherapists-in-training a haiku way of seeing for themselves and their work.

Tradition and many of these haiku may suggest that seeing through' happens only in singular contemplation. But these glimpses into the one-ness of things see through my life-companion's eyes as well. How could it be otherwise, in the reality of the glittering network of all our relations. Karen's awareness informs both the A-ha!s experienced together, and those moments saved for her. These poems also benefit from her many re-readings and refusals of word-forms not authentic to experience.

I'm grateful that publisher/editor Jane Reichhold got hooked into walking along this haiku circle. With her deft suggestions language clutter dropped away. Jane scrubbed these words probably ten times, until they were thin and transparent enough to see through.

Like Rachael Carson said, The more strongly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities [beauties and mysteries] of the universe around us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.
