Rezensionen

These two reference works, covering educational travel for students and life-long learners, are similar to Gerson Eisenberg's Learning Vacations ( Peterson's Guides, 1989. 6th ed.). Like Learning Vacations, Kaye's volume has some 100 entries. It is a selective compilation of programs sponsored by universities, private organizations, museums, etc. Selection criteria include a strong educational program, completion of successful trips, and a phone number and address. Kaye suggests users first browse through the "topics" section, which discusses an area (archaeology, backpacking, the arts), and then turn to the alphabetical list of organizations that offer programs in the area. The organization descriptions give examples of trips, types of accommodation, transportation, guides or leaders, and price. Quotations from satisfied travelers are interspersed throughout the text. The Guide to Academic Travel lists programs sponsored by over 250 organizations. The descriptions of the programs are longer than those in Travel and Learn and even include type of payment accepted (credit card, etc.) and deposit and cancellation information. There are indexes by geographic origin of sponsor, location of the program, and a specialty (subject) index, which is too broad to be really useful. Although there is duplication among the three books, each does include unique organizations. Either new title is recommended for public and academic libraries. Those libraries that have Learning Vaca tions may still want to consider The Guide , which is more comprehensive. -- Christine Bulson, SUNY at Oneonta Lib.
