For two centuries the barometer has been an indispensable laboratory instrument. Without the barometer to measure atmospheric pressure many other scientific measurements would be unobtainable. Even long before the Barometer came into common use, its invention contributed powerfully to the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century by making obsolete the idea of the physical impossibility of a vacuum. Yet, despite the barometer's revolutionary influence on science, Dr Middleton's book is the first complete history of the barometer as a scientific instrument. The author quotes from printed documents and manuscripts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries found in the course of his researches in numerous museums and other collections in western Europe and in North America. The story begins with the prehistory of the barometer, the Torricellian experiment, the subsequent experiments and controversies in the 1640's and the barometric experiments during the remainder of the seventeenth century. Later chapters concern the mercury barometer as a scientific instrument, discussing the efforts to expand the scale, to render the instrument portable, and to attain greater and greater accuracy. Then follow accounts of mercury barographs, the history of the corrections to the barometer, the history of the mercury barometer in North America, and the luminescence which appears when a barometer is moved in the dark. The final chapters discuss barometers other than those using the weight of a column of mercury. A large number of more interesting barometers seen by the author in his extensive travels are described in the Appendix. Nearly 200 figures and diagrams depict the wide variety of barometers discussed by the author. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 31760
